    LIBRARY DIRECTOR
    The Post-Standard in Syracuse, N.Y., a 120,000 daily, 177,000 Sunday newspaper in Central New York , is looking for a new library director.
    The right candidate must be able to define mission and set objectives and priorities for library: develop policy, work schedule and work flow for the library; supervise library staff. Our library director oversees newsroom research librarians, who provide research and research training for the newsroom and other newspaper departments; oversees electronic and manual archives; assesses the need for print resource and seeks to obtain them. The director will plan for technological change and implementation of new library systems; serve as liaison with library vendors, third-party databases that carry Post-Standard content, and community resources such as the historical associations and libraries. Required: Master of library science degree from an ALA-accredited institution. At least five years of work experience in a specialized library; at least three years of reference desk experience; at least five years of library management experience; demonstrated knowledge of standard archival practices and procedures; expertise in electronic communications technologies, Internet development, databases and other advances affecting text storage, retrieval, and secondary uses; demonstrated online database search expertise; demonstrated understanding of cataloging principles; demonstrated skill in oral presentation; proven ability to consistently work well with subordinates and supervisors alike, as well as the public and those the library does business with. Knowledge of current events; demonstrated skill in managing multiple priorities; ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure; demonstrated understanding of sound organizational development, management and supervisory principles.

    The Columbus Dispatch Library has a job opening for a News Researcher.
    We are a large metro daily (250,000 daily 360,000 Sunday). The Dispatch Printing Co. also owns 21 weeklies, radio,TV and cable news in the Columbus market. The library actively supports the newsrooms of the weekly papers and the television station.
    This person will provide detailed news research, database development, training and technical support for end users, collection building and archiving support.
    Proficiency with NEXIS, census tools, mapping tools, Internet sites, people finders and various public records.
    An MLS degree is preferred, 2-3 years of reference or research experience is essential, preferably in a news library.
    Experience with relational databases, spreadsheets, statistics and computer-assisted reporting techniques preferred.Experience importing or loading data from a variety of sources is desirable.
    We are a staff of 7 full-time (6 MLS).
    Everyone in the library performs nearly every single job from archiving text and images, and research, to putting the newspaper on the shelf.
    We run two Vu/Text (Newsbank) text archiving systems for The Dispatch & 21 weeklies in the area, and an IBM-NICA image/graphics/PDF archive.
    We also created, built & manage the newsroom Intranet with an InMagic library front end. The Intranet currently has 40 million public records and is growing.
    Our Library was remodeled last year, doubled in size, and is a popular destination with a growing periodicals collection.
