LIBRARIAN
Full-Time, Temporary
News Research is looking for someone to help create and maintain the newspaper's archives. Job duties include processing all published text, photos, graphics and pages to insure the accuracy and completeness of the archives, meeting production deadlines and maintaining legacy archives. This position's schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday 6 a.m. - 2 p.m., and is subject to change.
The qualified candidate will be detail-oriented and must have excellent reading comprehension and strong typing skills. Newsroom experience is preferred but not required.

Assistant Librarian
GENERAL SUMMARY
The purpose of this position is to support all activities of the information center of an international daily newspaper. The assistant librarian will be a key position in transforming the library from service center to proactive newsgathering partner in support of Monitor journalism. Responsibilities include providing deadline and in-depth research on any subject requested by the reporters and editors of The Christian Science Monitor, Monitor Publishing or any other Church Center department. This includes performing research on commercial database services, the Internet, print and other internal and external resources. The assistant librarian will also
assist in training news and management end-users in applications for the newsroom, archiving and maintaining data quality in the Merlin photo database, and other responsibilities essential to the functioning of the Monitor's library. In addition, the creation of custom tools and databases for the newsroom staff is an emerging part of the job.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performing Research
- Selecting appropriate database and determining most
effective search procedure
- Select articles, data, graphics, photos or other information
- Edits out extraneous material, transfers data to requestor
- Performing research in-house accessing reference material
including encyclopedias, back issues, directories, print-only resources
Coaching / Training
- Assist patrons with search strategy, research consultation
- Set up tracking folders for coverage / editing areas
- Giving library orientations to new staff, training them on
the databases, Intranet, photo archive, Monitor Library web sites
- Giving refresher training to correspondents or other
staffers
- Works with librarian in planning and giving training
sessions on Factiva.com, Monitor archives, Merlin, ProQuest, or other
Internet-related topics for efficient web usage in journalism
Photo / archiving
- Archiving published photos, cartoons and other content for
data quality assurance
- Works with photographers and photo editors to identify gaps
/ out of date material to help in planning
- Training other photo staff and newsroom users in use of the
photo archive
Library Staffing
- Maintaining library web pages, news calendars, experts
databases
- Assisting with reader requests from the request line,
feedback from CSMonitor.com, Scholarly queries for Monitor articles, or other
information-store related requests.
Other
- Attending news budget meetings
- Planning and participating in special projects / analytic
pieces
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MLS in library science, progress toward a library degree, or the equivalent in experience, such as 1 - 2 years in a newsroom or corporate information center. Bachelor's Degree, preferably in journalism, politics, or international studies.
Deep interest in news and libraries' contribution to journalism essential. Expert skills and knowledge of online databases, particularly Factiva.com, Lexis / Nexis, ProQuest, proficient Internet user. Background knowledge of domestic social, political, economic and international affairs required.
In addition to the aforementioned high comfort level with online databases, familiarity with archiving systems, Excel and web page programs helpful but not required. Enthusiasm for computer-assisted reporting / analytic journalism a plus.
Also desired: Skills in oral presentation to a group. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, in addition to sense of collegiality, a must. A daily news reading habit firmly in place is also required.
