Library cuts and the future of research?

Lots of discussion on NewsLib this week about the buyouts and cutbacks at the library at the Philadelphia newspapers. Steve Outing discusses the story on Poynter's E-Media Tidbits.

Here's my take on this story. As a long-time news librarian/researcher (about 30 years) who decided to retire and continue doing part of my job (an Intranet) from home, I have some controversial thoughts about the future of news libraries, judging by the response to my contribution to the discussion.
