Title: News Researcher
The St. Petersburg Times (FL) seeks a dynamic news researcher to deliver timely, pertinent research results to newsroom staff on a broad range of subjects utilizing electronic and print resources. The job requires someone who is energetic, resourceful and possesses strong analytical skills, and is able to produce top-quality work under deadline pressures.
DUTIES: The news researcher will work with editors, reporters and bureau staff, both independently and as a team member. Candidates should have a passion for news, solid news judgment and a broad general knowledge of current events.
Collegiality and a great sense of humor are vital.
Researchers at the St. Petersburg Times routinely "seize teachable moments" to demystify technology for reporters and editors, and conduct training sessions on topics ranging from public records access to enlightened Internet use.
The news research team uses PCs and a network of internal and external information resources to gather, analyze and deliver information to news staff in our 5-county subscriber area.
Times researchers oversee and maintain NewsWeb, the Times' newsroom Intranet.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ideal candidates will have prior news research experience. An MLS is a plus, but not imperative with the right combination of experience and skills. candidates must be energetic, resourceful and professional, able to produce top-quality work under deadline pressures. They must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with equal ease.
Proficiency using LexisNexis, Dialog, Factiva, Accurint, and other commercial online information services is necessary, as is familiarity with spreadsheets, databases, and web authoring tools.
A sound grasp of public records, campaign finance data, census data, government documents and legal resources is also necessary.
Training experience, either one-on-one or in a classroom setting, is also valued.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with the right combination of dedication and inquisitiveness, a journalistic sense of how to get answers to questions and pursue relationships.
Normal workdays are Mondays - Fridays. The research department is staffed from 10:30am until 8:00pm, with occasional late-night and weekend hours.
