SLA Bylaws Vote

Special Libraries Association members: don't forget about the bylaws vote!

"The SLA Board of Directors has approved a plan to create a more flexible dues system while ensuring that SLA programs, services, and initiatives can continue to provide value for the member’s investment. For this plan to be enacted, you and your fellow members must approve an amendment to the SLA Bylaws regarding changes to the Association’s dues."

Voting began on Thursday, September 15, at midnight and will close at 5:00 pm EDT on Friday, October 7. Information and the electronic ballot is linked above.

Happy Birthday, Newslib!

September 15th is Newslib's birthday. Barbara Semonche, list administrator, sent a note out reminding us of the value it brings us. It's been around for twelve years today. Imagine where we'll be with it in twelve more years!

"Please help by contributing whatever money you can. Please note, that because we had to set up this fund in a hurry, contributions are not yet tax deductible. You can send money via electronic transfer from your bank or by check to:

Digital Presevation Survey of News Archives

UCLA's Department of Information Studies and the international preservation research group InterPARES hope news archivists will spare about an hour of their time to complete a survey regarding best practices and long-term issues of digital news archives.

From an e-mail to Newslib:

"By taking the survey, you will:
  • Help assess the potential threats to invaluable cultural resources
  • Raise awareness of digital issues in the publishing community
  • Drive standards and best practices for future archives
  • Assist vendors in developing practical systems

This first-ever survey is envisioned as determining some benchmarks that we can observe evolve in the next several years, as image archives systems mature and news archives are faced with large-scale data migrations.

Participants will receive copies of the final report to InterPARES so be sure to fill out the confidential contact information completely. Please e-mail or call with any questions or comments."
