NEWS LIBRARIAN—CNN WASHINGTON, DC
The CNN DC library functions as both a research center and video archive, making the news librarian position extremely diverse and exciting. The primary role of news librarian is to support the research and video needs of the editors, producers and journalists of the CNN DC bureau.

Responsibilities include performing video research using the in-house database system to find sound and visual elements for reporters, producers and editors. The News Librarian also conducts information research to find facts, opinions, analysis, experts and articles using Lexis-Nexis, Factiva, the Internet and traditional reference materials in support of news production.

Additional responsibilities include processing, cataloging and assigning appropriate indexing terms to cut and raw video generated by news production team. As this is a small department where teamwork is essential and tasks rotate, the Librarian will participate in various library projects that include but are not limited to, videotape selection, maintaining the accuracy and consistency of the thesaurus, prepping materials for off-site storage, intern supervising, intranet web page design and creation, tape circulation, and development of internet training classes.

Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited university required; two or more years of professional experience desired; experience and interest in a news library environment; interest in US government and politics, highly-motivated individual with a propensity towards working independently and under deadline pressure; excellent online searching skills with a particular proficiency with Lexis-Nexis, Factiva, and the Internet, experience in intranet page maintenance, prior television production experience or background concentrating heavily on video and experience with digital archives desired. May involve some evening and weekend hours.

Job Description:

TECHNICAL

SKILLS:

Must have strong service orientation and able to work under pressure and within tight time deadlines. Must be able to multi-task and set priorities well. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Needs to be comfortable in a training environment.

Lexis-Nexis, Factiva, Dialog (should have great competence with these services).
HTML, Adobe Acrobat, PowerPoint, Excel

The Palm Beach Post has an opening for a full-time Photo Archivist, bilingual English/Spanish given preference. The position is responsible for the development and maintenance of the photo collections of The Palm Beach Post, La Palma, and the Palm Beach Daily News. A college degree is required and previous news library/photo handling experience is highly desirable. Macintosh and PC experience is necessary and accurate typing is a must.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Daily archiving of photos that have run in The Palm Beach Post, La Palma, and the Palm Beach Daily News.
- Daily preparation of newspaper sets used for archiving, microfilming, and newsroom purposes, as well as all procedures related to microfilming, including correspondence, storage and record keeping.
- Classification and filing of new paper and slide photos
- Works in close consultation with the Photo Department, News Illustration, newsroom and bureaus
- Photo research assignments
- Other duties as necessary to assure the smooth running of the library photo operation

QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous photo archiving and collection development experience desirable
- News library experience highly desirable
- College degree required
- Experience with Macintosh and PC applications, particularly Adobe Photoshop highly desirable
- Excellent problem solving, time management, and communication skills
- Ability to set priorities and work well as a team member
- Good spelling and grammar
- Fluency in written Spanish high desirable

Intern opportunity, Florida

The Palm Beach Post newspaper is offering a paid internship for 2006. We're looking for one brilliant Library/Information Studies student who is interested in pursuing a career in News Research. Our interns are treated as professionals. You will join a staff that includes five researchers and work in a fast-paced deadline-oriented environment. This is a great opportunity to get some real world reference and archiving experience and probably receive published credit for your work. This is a full time, 40 hour a week 12-week internship. We pay $475/week during our internship, but that does not include room, board or transportation.
We are always happy to work with interns trying to find a place to live in the area. The start date is flexible.

Qualifications:
Open to full-time library students. We also accept applications from people who have graduated within six months of the start of the internship. Previous library experience preferred. Experience with public record research and commercial databases such as Factiva and LexisNexis preferred. Experience with both Macintosh and PCs preferred.
Knowledge of HTML and the Web a big plus. Working knowledge of Spanish is also preferred.

Intern needed in San Antonio next summer

The San Antonio Express-News is seeking a summer intern for news research. Graduate or upper-level students of Library Science or Journalism will be considered for a 12-week, 40-hour paid position. The internship schedule is flexible, but would most likely begin in late May or early June.

Responsibilities will include performing research for daily news stories and longer-term news projects using online sources such as Nexis, public records databases and the Internet. Possible intensive work with a photo collection-weeding project will also offer experience working with images and collection management. Intern will also learn how to archive the daily paper and will have an opportunity to develop some newsroom Intranet pages.

This position will provide experience in all areas of news librarianship. Ideal candidate should show interest in current events and be ready to work in a deadline-driven environment.
