The Sacramento Bee is seeking a News Researcher to support the work of 300 journalists at one of the best regional newspapers in the country. The ideal candidate should have an abiding interest in the news and possess extensive research skills--including fluency with online and print information sources. The researcher should be a tenacious and resourceful self-starter, able to pursue the research needs of an assigned story, as well as to initiate ideas for and approaches to coverage. The job requires a mix of research support for breaking daily stories, for graphics and for longer-term investigative projects.

The NBC Universal InfoCenter, located in Secaucus, NJ, has an immediate opening for a temporary Research Librarian. The temporary Librarian will have the following major responsibilities:

· Provide targeted information services to all NBCU divisions

· Provide research on deadline to News reporters, writers and producers.

· Assist News and corporate patrons in use of applications such as Nexis, Factiva, and Internet research tools.

· Select and add content to InfoCenter intranet research page.

Research projects cover a wide range of topics, and involve the heavy use of online databases and other print and electronic resources.

Requirements include:

· At least 2 years of recent professional experience in a news or corporate information center

· Expert skills in use of online databases, especially Nexis, Factiva, Autotrack and other public records databases

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

· Ability to work effectively under deadline pressures

· Flexibility in working varied schedules; regular shifts will be 10am-6pm or 11am-7pm; librarian will also be required to work some holidays, nights and weekends


The ideal candidate will also have a Masters degree in Library Science and some knowledge of HTML programming.

Anonymous news librarian blogger

Richard Nelsson of The Guardian's research department sends word of a blog by a UK news librarian, written anonymously: Gaolhouse Blog. The blog's been around over a year, and although I don't see any news research connections on first scan, I'll take Richard's word for it.....

BTW, I found a link at the Gaolhouse that is worth checking out: Pubsub's list of the most influential librarian blogs. Number one: Sabrina Pacifici's BeSpacific! Congrats Sabrina. At least two other newslib member blogs show up here too: Eli Edwards' Confession of a Mad Librarian, and DrWeb's Domain, both in the '40s.

Job Opening: Text Archive Manager
The Atlanta Journal Constitution

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Information Services department has an opening for a text archive manager. We are looking for a problem-solver and leader who can manage and continue the evolution of our text archiving operations.

The successful candidate will be technologically savvy and bring excellent management skills to the job. This manager will supervise a team of four full-time and five part-time archivists who work overnight to make AJC content available on ajc.com, our web archive, commercial databases and our internal SCC archive on the day of publication. He or she also will work closely with ajc.com and CoxNet on web content management issues.

Requirements:
- Past experience in electronic archiving and content management systems.
- At least five years management and supervisory experience.
- M.L.S. from ALA-accredited library school preferred.
- Keen interest in and understanding of news and online information industry trends.
- Firm grasp of copyright issues.
- Experience with web site taxonomy management and automated metatagging a plus.

Job opening in Palm Beach

The Palm Beach Post has an opening for a full-time Photo Archivist, bilingual English/Spanish given preference. The position is responsible for the development and maintenance of the photo collections of The Palm Beach Post, La Palma, and the Palm Beach Daily News. A college degree is required and previous news library/photo handling experience is highly desirable. Macintosh and PC experience is necessary and accurate typing is a must.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Daily archiving of photos that have run in The Palm Beach Post, La Palma, and the Palm Beach Daily News.
- Daily preparation of newspaper sets used for archiving, microfilming, and newsroom purposes, as well as all procedures related to microfilming, including correspondence, storage and record keeping.
- Classification and filing of new paper and slide photos
- Works in close consultation with the Photo Department, News Illustration, newsroom and bureaus
- Photo research assignments
- Other duties as necessary to assure the smooth running of the library photo operation

QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous photo archiving and collection development experience desirable
- News library experience highly desirable
- College degree required
- Experience with Macintosh and PC applications, particularly Adobe Photoshop highly desirable
- Excellent problem solving, time management, and communication skills
- Ability to set priorities and work well as a team member
- Good spelling and grammar
- Fluency in written Spanish high desirable
- Accurate typing 35 wpm
